“I am fascinated by the relationship between my living space and my physical, mental, and emotional experience of it. When I’m sitting at home, washing the dishes, watering the plants, or just staring out the window, I often ruminate or daydream. In my studio practice, I create mixed media paintings and collages that are visual representations of how thoughts and emotions can affect our presence in a moment. While I depict everyday, seemingly unremarkable subjects, my use of color and material results in visually complex images that suggest a kind of overstimulated, psychological activity. Even when nothing is happening, so much is happening within our minds.
The smaller collages that I create are non-objective and are more of a celebration of the material itself; however, in larger works, I always depict something that is real. I start with a line drawing of a specific space or object in my home. As I add color and material to the image, that clear and simple drawing becomes less apparent. The final image seems almost like a non-objective painting, even though it began as an objective drawing. The viewer may not ever see the base image in the final painting, but I hope they discover a lot of exciting moments in the material as they look for it.”
